Thoughts on the Tumblr staff’s banning of blogs they consider to be pro-self harm or pro-eating disorder.

***DISCLAIMER: I work in mental health.***

I’m sure we’ve all seen the post now. It’s so inane. I laughed when I read it. So, so, so profoundly stupid and hypocritical. Typical so-far-left-it-circles-around-and-becomes-fascist. The tumblr staff clearly completely misunderstands these types of blogs. What they are terming self-harm blogs are really communities for people suffering from conditions that are highly stigmatized to come for support and feel a little less weird and alone and that they are not the only ones going through what they are going through. I find self-mutilation and eating disorders to be tragic- of course I do. But banning blogs with such content will make sufferers feel further alienated. Tumblr staff is following in the footsteps of all who believe that cutters and people with eating disorders are just attention whores.

Circles of support for those suffering from behavioral health issues is so critical. It cannot be overstated HOW critical. How hypocritical of the tumblr staff to shut down blogs after how much it promoted free internet speech during SOPA. It reeks of suburban pearl clutching. There is a lot of dark, sick stuff on the internet, and on tumblr too, and self-harm and pro-eating disorder blogs don’t even scratch the fucking surface. If it stems from worry about teens, it’s not the tumblr staff’s job to protect them. It’s a parent’s job. This is utterly laughable. Tumblr staff, you should be ashamed.
