otherkin is ridiculous to me, but cultural appropriation is definitely a real thingAnonymous
Well, it is certainly more real than otherkin! I’m not saying there aren’t actual issues at the heart of it. Most definitely, it is offensive to do blackface or dress as a “sexy squaw” for Halloween, and just makes the wearer look ignorant. What bothers me are the folk on Tumblr who take issue with every little thing. A white person with dreads? Cultural appropriation. A white girl wearing mocassins? Cultural appropriation. Joking use of the term “spirit animal” (as in, “lando calrissian is my spirit animal”)? Cultural appropriation. Using chopsticks? Doing yoga? Henna tattoos? Someone call the waaaahmbulance! And the angry telling off and creative curses the professionally offended come up with, like “douchewaffle.” I just want to shake these folks. In the words of Coketalk, get a real cause, because this shit does not rise to the level of controversy. It strikes me, that to make such a big deal of such nonsense, the professionally offended tumblr police do not know much about real suffering. Which there is a lot of. Understatement of the year, I know. And there is also a lot of racism still, real racism, insidious racism. My wearing dreamcatcher earrings does not rise to that level. But to the social justice community it is on the same level as Jim Crow and posts about such things are prefaced with the same trigger warnings! I am not ignorant. I am well read and bright, and would hate to do anything racist, BECAUSE I AM NOT A RACIST, but I keep being called this by the social justice community. I also find it nearly offensive that this community calls itself Social Justice. I don’t see any justice. Justice is a powerful word indeed. What I see is a lot of whining, and a lot of stunting and acting superior to nearly everyone. These so-called tolerant folks. It’s been said that the very far right and the very far left are actually quite similar, if politics are seen as a line around a sphere. They come quite close…think Mao Tse Tung anc Hitler. The far right has God. The extreme far left (I consider myself a moderate liberal) has the social justice community. And that’s all I have to say about that. Except that I was getting so into this response that my potholder caught on fire on the stove, and I dropped it to the ground and stamped it out with my little be-mocassined feet. Cheers. And come off anon.
